Somawathi Stupa

The Somawathi Stupa, also known as Somawathie Chethiya, is a significant Buddhist stupa located in Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka. It holds great religious importance as it is believed to house a relic of one of Lord Buddha’s canine teeth. Built during the 2nd century BCE by Prince Abhaya and named after his wife, the stupa has rich historical and architectural significance, following the traditional stupa design. It serves as a major pilgrimage site for Buddhists and hosts an annual religious festival. Efforts have been made to restore and preserve this important cultural and religious heritage site in Sri Lanka.
